The usage of carbon dioxide, among experts referred to as Carbon Capture & Utilization (CCU), is gaining momentum. First commercial production of CO2-based fuels and polymers has been launched, several additional technologies have progressed far enough to allow production on an industrial scale in the near future – with advanced biotechnology and chemical catalysis.
At the same time renewable energy from solar, wind and hydropower is becoming cheaper each year and the latest plants at favourable locations can already produce at the same price level as fossil energy sources or even below that. A perfect situation for combining cheap and abundant renewables with carbon utilization to store energy and to produce renewable fuels and chemicals. The new version of the European “Renewable Energy Directive (RED II)” for the period from 2020 to 2030 opens the door for all kinds of CCU fuels for the first time, according to the compromise agreed on in June 2018. Multiple counting will be included for renewable fuels in aviation and shipping. Several investments are planned. Which technologies will be in favour?
The “nova Session on technology of the future: Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU)” will present and discuss all related topics for beginners and professionals. What makes the utilization of CO2 attractive? Which role will CCU play in the sustainable fuels and chemistry? nova experts discuss possible options of CCU technologies, latest developments and the political framework.
